Wanbang supplied 200 container houses and 12 toilet houses for a road construction camp in Suriname. The second number is the one that decides whether the camp is usable.

Two Numbers, Not One

A purchase order for this kind of camp reads like one line: accommodation, 200 units. It is really two lines, and the second one carries the risk. The modular camp building range lists the types that usually travel together on one order — accommodation, ablution, canteen, office — because a camp is a set, not a building.

Seventeen to one says these are shared blocks, not en-suites. The cubicle count per toilet house is what converts 12 into a headcount — without it nobody can say whether the camp holds 400 men or 1,200. And every one of the 200 units still needs a drain route to one of those 12.

What 200 Units Change That 20 Do Not

Twenty units is a site problem. Two hundred is a systems problem, and the systems are all outside the buildings. Our note on camp power load and distribution covers one of these in detail; the table lists the rest.

The photograph below is that layer, not the building: a hardened strip between the rows, a distribution box with its own breakers on the wall, condensers in a line, pipework at skirting level. All of it is what fails first on a site this size.

The Toilet Block Is Where Quotes Go Wrong

Twelve toilet houses cost a fraction of 200 accommodation units, which is why they get one line in the quote and three surprises on site. That line has to carry six things: cubicle count and split by sex, urinal and shower positions, hand-wash points, water supply method, discharge destination, and ventilation. A road contract usually runs a main camp plus forward posts that follow the works. That single fact decides whether the sanitation is built to stay or built to move. A block piped into a cast-in-place septic tank cannot follow a paving crew thirty kilometres up the alignment; a block on an independent tank, or a package unit, can. Decide it before the concrete goes down, because after that the pipes are where they are.

Suriname: Rainforest, Not a Season

Suriname is rainforest from the coastal belt to the interior, with no real dry season. The design case is permanent humidity rather than a wet month, and roofs are sized on storm intensity rather than annual total.

A second issue has nothing to do with weather. The population and the port sit on the coast; the interior is reached by river and a thin road network. On a road contract, the road being built is often the road to the camp. Quote delivery to the site gate, not to the port — the inland leg is the one that slips.

What to Fix Before the Order

1. Camp layout — main camp position, number of forward posts, how the contract is staged along the alignment.

2. Headcount per block — cubicles, shower positions and the male-to-female split you are planning for.

3. Power — total connected load, generator or grid, and whether distribution stops at the block or the unit.

4. Water and discharge — source, storage volume, and where the tank sits relative to the blocks.

5. Delivery sequence — all at once, or in tranches that follow the paving front.

We will not quote 200 units as a stand-alone line and leave the 12 to the buyer. The two numbers work as one package.
